Melicena, a small fishing hamlet on the favoured shores of the Mediterranean, is a superb location for a new holiday home or investment property. Located on the Costa Tropical between Motril and Adra, when the new coastal motorway is completed travelling time will be approximately 1 hour from Almeria , or 1½ hours from Malaga and Granada airports. Within reach of the skiing in the Sierra Nevada (about 2 hours) and with an ever increasing number of golf courses, there are ample year round leisure opportunities. When a day away from the coast is needed, the countryside of the Sierras de La Contraviesa and Nevada offer tranquil corners, breathtaking views and character-full whitewashed villages.
Coastal villages include Castell de Ferro, to the west of Melicena, with a good choice of bars and restaurants, and the larger, more developed areas of Calahonda and Torreneuva further along the coast all within easy reach for an evening's entertainment. Just 5 minutes to the east are the developing La Rabita and, 5km inland, Albunol. A further 10 minutes drive is Adra, a thriving town with supermarkets, port and many other facilities. The well developed golf and beach resorts of Almerimar and Roquetas are less than 45 minutes drive from Melicena.
Melicena itself is a clutch of traditional Spanish sea front homes, mostly renovated, and a couple of shops and bars that will be augmented by the commercial units that will be constructed with the Melicena Playa construction. The front has an attractive paseo and a wide beach of coarse sand typical of this coast. The pretty village and beach is defined by the huge rocks of the Punta Negra at the easternmost extent of the beach. Behind the village is a pleasant walk up to the old watchtower, although the threat of Moorish invaders has long passed!
